Review of the 2012 McDonald’s My Little Pony Happy Meal Toys

My Little Pony McDonald's 2012 Happy Meal toys

I’ve gotten my hands on the complete set of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic McDonald’s Happy Meal toys for 2012. These toys are now available in some McDonald’s restaurants, with or without a children’s Happy Meal. We’ll a look at all 8 figures, the key chain accessory they come with and do a quick comparison to last year’s similar but not identical Happy Meal toys. This batch includes the main six ponies Applejack, Rainbow Dash, Twilight Sparkle, Rarity, Fluttershy and Pinkie Pie as well as Cheerilee and Lily Blossom. A big thanks to Gemma for picking these up for me.

The toys are of a pretty good quality. The mane is once again plastic but the tail is still combable hair. Most of the toys have at least one leg in the air making it difficult to make them stand on anything but a very flat surface.

Keep reading to see close up shots of the rest of the toys.

Voice of Twilight Sparkle, Tara Strong has uploaded a voice message to Twitter

Tara Strong (@tarastrong), the voice of Twilight Sparkle on My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, has uploaded an audio clip to twitter. It seems after learning what Trolling on the internet means, she has decided to have some fun with it. I encourage more of this.

I’m not certain how well this audio will work since its an HTML 5 control, but I have embedded below. Seems to work in Chrome at least.

EverFree Radio interviews Cathy Weseluck, voice of Spike

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Cathy Weseluck voice of Spike

The latest episode of EverFree Radio includes an interview with Cathy Weseluck, known to fans as the voice of Spike the dragon and the Mayor of Ponyville. The interview starts at around 30 minutes into the show and lasts over an hour.

Cathy discusses much throughout this episode including how she started out in voice acting and My Little Pony, the process of recording and episode and the voice of Rarity in an earlier My Little Pony show. When discussing voicing Spike she mentions how she changed voices as he aged in one episode, and does some example voices of that. She also discusses voice acting workshops she gives, as can be seen on her web site.

Derpy no more: Character references removed in re-released episode

In a very sad and unfortunate turn of events, the episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic titled ‘The Last Roundup’ has been re-released on iTunes. The first minute or two featured a very memorable scene by the fan-named character Derpy Hooves in her first named appearance. In the aftermath of that episode, there was a small but vocal backlash over the character’s portrayal. By nature Derpy is supposed to be extremely clumsy and goofy. She was given a voice to match that silly nature and those who complained felt that it made fun of the metally retarded.

As a result, the newly released version of the episode has removed Rainbow Dash directly calling Derpy by her name. Derpy’s lines were also re-recorded to sound less goofy and silly. It appears the animation was changed to slightly tone down the googley nature of her eyes, but the audio is definitely very different. You can see the new version and the old version of the video below for comparison by clicking the “Continue Reading” link.

These changes have been confirmed by one of the show’s artists via their DeviantArt page here. Those comments have been mirrored below.

Reports seem to state that the Friendship Express DVD coming out on February 28 will have the unmodified version of the episode, so if you want the original, it might be the only place to get it. I have included a link in this post to the DVD on Amazon.

The Cleveland Show references My Little Pony

The Cleveland Show References My Little Pony TSRDFSPPRAJ

An obscure My Little Pony reference came from an unlikely source this week as what is arguably the worst show in television history, Seth MacFarlane’s The Cleveland Show, included a sign with a hidden messages. The letters TSRDFSPPRAJ appeared on a sign held by the Cleveland Brown, the show’s horribly unfunny titular character. These letters stand for Twilight Sparkle, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Pinkie Pie, Rarity, Applejack.

Background info on My Little Pony felt animation

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Felt Pinkie Pie and Cranky Doodle Donkey shaking hands

This week’s episode of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic featured a sequence done entirely in felt. Pinkie Pie goes through the steps of meeting and befriending a new resident of Ponyville, and then breaks the 4th wall by bringing a piece of felt from her mind into the “real” world. One of the show’s storyboard artists Jocelan Thiessen gives us details on this sequence which you can read in a post on her blog.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic - Felt Pinkie Pie and a big green felt check

Jocelan, who is experienced with working in felt, cut out all the pieces over the course of a week. Show director Jayson Thiessen animated the pieces in stop motion for the full effect. The end result is truly remarkable. A big thanks to the Thiessens for all their hard work on the show.

We can’t share the clip with you, but keep reading for more pictures of the felt designs.

The origin of Big Macintosh’s “Eeyup”?

My Little Pony Friendship is Magic Big Macintosh

Here’s a short video written by and starring Peter New, voice actor for Big Macintosh. Peter plays the bartender who says “Yep” at 1 minute and 8 seconds.

Peter shared this video to his facebook page, though even he seems to be only jokingly suggesting that this is where the “Eeyup” really came from. Is this a trademark line of Peter’s? A hidden reference? A line in the script that Peter followed with little significance? Will we ever really know the answer to these burning questions?

Keep reading to compare clips from this short and My Little Pony.
